On an August evening three years ago, neurosurgeon Scott Leary performed emergency surgery on a Carlsbad cyclist who was paralyzed from the neck down after being hit head-on by a car. By the time he was done in the operating room, Leary had performed a miracle.
The next day, Leary’s patient, John Miksa, wiggled a thumb and 21 days later walked out of the hospital under his own steam. Leary became a poster child for Scripps Health, appearing on the cover of the 2009 Scripps Annual Report, bus stop signs, Internet banners and more than 80 billboards countywide.
Raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, he obtained his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis, where his medical school class was ranked No. 1 in the nation. Leary has been a spine fellowship-trained neurosurgeon at Senta Clinic since 2007 and operates at Scripps and Sharp hospitals.
